Assessor Job Description

The Assessor/Trainer is responsible for training and assessing learners’ performance and related knowledge across a range of tasks, ensuring that the competence and/or knowledge demonstrated meets the National Occupational Standards. This role involves leading Apprenticeship/NVQ Work-Based Learning programmes, requiring initiative, flexibility, and the ability to support, train, and guide learners towards successful qualification completion.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement and administer all assessment and quality assurance procedures in line with Awarding Organisations' directives.
  • Support, train, and guide learners to develop their personal and professional skills, ensuring successful qualification completion.
  • Assess learners and provide feedback to a high standard, utilising audio and video technology as necessary.
  • Liaise with peer Assessors, Internal Quality Advisors, and management to share good practices and attend regular meetings for progress and standardisation.
  • Lead the development, planning, and delivery of short courses, teaching on these courses subject to area of expertise.
  • Work closely with sales teams for new business development leads.
  • Contribute to learner recruitment, retention, achievement, and curriculum development initiatives.
  • Maintain ongoing personal and professional development in line with quality assurance policies.
  • Participate in the enrolment and learner sign-up process and support in preparation for External Quality Assurance visits.
  • Undertake other duties as specified by the line manager, commensurate with the post level.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Essential: Current involvement within the relevant business sector, experience as a trainer and assessor, ability to meet targets, teamwork, and support learners in a work-based environment.
  • Desirable: Experience with diverse caseloads, delivering and managing Apprenticeship Frameworks, short courses, and Maths & English.

Qualifications/Training

  • Essential: Level 2 English and Maths, professional qualifications in the relevant field at least to level 3, vocational qualification Level 4/5 in the appropriate area, Assessment and Quality Assurance qualifications (e.g., TAQA, A1), and willingness to undergo further training.
  • Desirable: Higher education qualifications, membership of a relevant professional body, and specific sector qualifications (e.g., SIA Licence).

Aptitudes and Abilities

  • Essential: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organisational and time management skills, ICT proficiency, ability to manage own workload, and a flexible approach to liaising with learners, employers, and staff.

Knowledge

  • Essential: Up-to-date knowledge and competence for teaching and assessment, understanding of Health and Safety, Equality and Diversity, Safeguarding, and Counterterrorism legislation, and ICT proficiency for teaching, learning, assessment, and communication.

Attitude/Motivation

  • Essential: Strong commitment to CPD, positive response to change, open to new ideas and collaborative working, commitment to ethical standards and customer care.

Other Factors

  • Essential: Ability to travel, flexible working hours, satisfactory DBS outcome, and provision of referee information.
