Podcast Highlights

[00:04:59] The apprenticeship levy is a tax offset against a salary bill for organizations with over a 3 million pound salary. The funds are placed in a digital apprenticeship account to be used for apprenticeship training. The government contributes 95% of the funding for apprenticeship. Businesses can use this free money to hire and upskill employees.

[00:07:47] Businesses should embrace apprenticeships and the enthusiasm and passion of young people, rather than being scared of the unknown. With the right support and training providers, apprenticeships can lead to a number of skilled apprentices in various disciplines.

[00:13:14] 47% of apprentices last year were existing staff, businesses are upskilling rather than helping young people, and many companies do not have a clear social value strategy.

[00:15:50] Directly targeting end users for apprenticeships leads to successful outcomes by addressing departmental pain points and business challenges such as skill shortages, retention, and boosting productivity.

[00:18:56] Apprenticeships were successful in the department because of passionate individuals who wanted a career, resulting in a half graduate and half apprentices recruitment. Internal champions helped encourage and facilitate the program.

[00:20:50] Employers must understand the commitment required to support apprentices, who are not suitable for all businesses, and should not be seen as just an economical way to train. Apprentices require time and support, and should be treated like everyone else in the team. It is important to work with the right training provider and not set them up for failure. Apprenticeships provide young adults with additional learning and career opportunities.

[00:24:46] Understand the client's needs and deliver customized apprenticeship programs for their specific sectors and challenges, while ensuring the learners get the necessary qualifications and experience for their career growth.

[00:33:08] Organizations can lose their apprenticeship levy if they don't use it within two years. Co-funding could help small businesses in areas with prominent employers. Many businesses don't use their apprenticeship levy, which is a concern for the longevity of the program.

[00:35:39] Government does little for apprenticeships, so apprenticeship providers self-promote during National Apprenticeship Week. Schools are getting better at promoting apprenticeships. Fear of student debt may result in more people attending apprenticeships instead of universities.

[00:41:47] Focus on business goals and needs when considering apprenticeship programs, considering benefits, long-term goals, and individual program specifications, while emphasizing support for the employer, learner, and provider.
