The Social Switch Project
We Have Recently Announced a 3 Year Extension To The Social Switch Project, Which Delivers 2 Key Strands Of Work In The Online Harms And Employability Space:
Strand 1 will deliver accredited training to a minimum of 750 London based frontline practitioners and trusted adults (Teachers, Youth Workers, Parents, Carers, Police) each year, in order to understand the challenges and opportunities of the online space, and support young people to be better equipped and educated, for a safer online journey.
Strand 2 will support a minimum of 358 young people aged 16-30 each year who may be at risk of, or have experienced, serious violence, exploitation, and/or grooming. The project equips young people with the skills and personalised mentorship needed to gain sustainable careers in the digital and surrounding sectors, whilst also offering interventions for young women and girls, focusing on how they can protect themselves from online abuse and exploitation, and how to recognise and report it.

About the role
The role of
Career Mentor is an excellent opportunity to provide tailored employability support to a caseload of young people, managing and developing their skills to encourage progression into sustainable employment, education, apprenticeships, and training opportunities. Championing the rights and needs of those facing barriers to work, you will have responsibility for engaging a range of referral partners, and you will have the opportunity to deliver facilitated employability workshops.
Our Targeted, But Not Exclusive, Groups:
- Young women
- Young people who have experience of the care system
- Black and mixed ethnicity young men, who are involved in, or at risk of, entering the criminal justice system
- Black background young people, who are at risk from school exclusion, or feel disengaged and unsafe at school or within the community
- Young people living in inadequate housing, and areas characterised by poverty
- Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority people with poor mental health, and experiencing poor outcomes from treatment
About You
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to gain people’s confidence, and put them at ease.
- Flexible, adaptable, persuasive, and patient, with a positive approach to problem solving, and a can-do attitude.
- Target and results driven, with good organisational and administrative skills, and the ability to prioritise.
- Able to effectively cope with pressure, working to deadlines to produce reports.
Main Duties And Accountabilities
- Managing a small caseload of young people with career plans and progression, accurately identifying their needs, challenges, career ambitions, strengths, and development areas, and signposting where relevant.
- Delivering high-quality in-work support, and advice and guidance, for young people on our employability programmes, that sustains participants for an appropriate amount of time, ensuring that participants sustain progression into apprenticeships and sustained employment.
- Assisting in the delivery of 1-1 and group work sessions, such as interview techniques, job searches, CV writing, and confidence building, to support and motivate young people, preparing them to a high standard for interview with employers.
- Completing goal focused action plans for young people, preparing CVs, cover letters, job/apprenticeship application forms, job packs, undertaking job searches with participants, and arranging interviews where appropriate.
- Engaging with the local community and undertaking outreach work, to successfully identify young people for employability programmes – this includes supporting the delivery of any relevant events, job fairs, workshops, and seminars.
- Ensuring that all inputted data is securely stored, and progress logged.
- Ensuring timely input and communication of key documents and information, to ensure high contractual compliance standards, and effective delivery of operational KPI targets.
- Complying with all relevant policies and procedures, such as Safeguarding/Prevent, Health and Safety, and Diversity and Equality.

- Five GCSE's, at Grade C or above, or equivalent.
- Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Teams and Office.
- A relevant professional qualification, in coaching or IAG, will be an advantage.
- An awareness of the digital or technical sectors, and/or apprenticeships, may be beneficial.
Additional Information
Salary: £27,000 - £29,500 per annum
Hours of work: Full time, 37 hours per week
Contract: Permanent
Flexibility: Hybrid working model - 3 days working in the community (London), 2 days working from home, occasional office days
