About The Job
Job summary
The Science Team is working to ensure scientific evidence and thinking are embedded across DfE. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team as we work to support a diverse range of scientific areas within the department. We work to support scientific advice being fed into policy decisions, develop links with external experts, and scope and commission scientific research – all working closely with the Chief Scientific Adviser. You will have the opportunity get involved across all these areas of work.
This role sits in the Central Analysis and Research Division (CARD), in DfE’s Strategy Group. CARD provides a broad range of analytical advice including modelling, data analysis, economic analysis and social research, as well as science. We work very closely with colleagues in Strategy and Delivery Unit, and routinely provide ministerial advice on the highest priority issues.
The Science Team is a small, friendly team within CARD focusing on a diverse range of topics offering scientific support and expertise.
Job Description
You will have opportunities for involvement across all the activities of the team, taking ownership of a portfolio of activity and working collaboratively with others to contribute to workstreams.
Job Responsibilities:
- Engaging with policy colleagues to understand their evidence needs and scoping where scientific research and/or advice may be able to help.
- Providing support to the Chief Scientific Advisor and the DfE Science Advisory Council.
- Supporting and overseeing research projects.
- Keeping the team intranet page up to date.
- Supporting governance and prioritisation processes for the department’s portfolio of scientific research.
- Working with external bodies such as the UKRI Research Councils on projects to drive forward shared priorities.
- Contributing to the drafting of briefings, correspondence and responses to Parliamentary Questions and Freedom of Information requests.
Person specification
Essential Criteria:
- At least a first degree in a scientific subject (can include mathematics, engineering, medicine), or equivalent experience in a science role.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with experience of conveying a range of complex scientific concepts clearly and concisely to non-specialist audiences.
- The ability to rapidly assimilate complex and sometimes contradictory evidence from a range of sources, potentially in a subject area outside your own expertise.
- A collaborative approach to working, with experience of building strong working relationships with people from a range of professional backgrounds.
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively and keep track of multiple strands of work. Knowledge and experience of applying project management techniques would be an advantage.
Desirable Criteria:
- Having a higher degree and/or experience working in scientific research would be an advantage.
Desirable criteria will only be assessed at interview, in the event of a tie break situation, to make an informed decision.
Qualifications

Terms and conditions of candidates transferring from ALBs and NDPBs
Bodies that are not accredited by the Civil Service Commission and are not able to advertise at Across Government on Civil Service jobs will be treated as external new starters and will come into DfE on modernised terms and conditions with a salary at the band minimum.
Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission but do not have civil service status will be offered modernised terms and will not have continuous service recognised for leave or sickness benefits. Salaries should be offered at band minimum, but there is some flexibility where this would cause a detriment to the individual.
Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission and do have Civil Service status will be treated as OGD transfers. Staff appointed on lateral transfer will move on to pre-modernised DfE terms (unless they were on modernised terms in their previous organisation). Staff appointed on promotion will move on to modernised DfE terms. Staff will transfer over on their existing salary (on lateral transfer) and any pay above the DfE pay band maximum will be paid as a mark time allowance. Staff moving on promotion will have their salaries calculated using the principles set out in the attached OGD transfer supplementary information.
