About the team
We have over 100 engineers and fleet support staff working directly on our passenger fleets, alongside experienced key relationship managers with a deep understanding of our customers' needs and expectations on their existing fleets, and investment in new rolling stock.
Key Responsibilities
Role Purpose
On this 4-year Applied Professional Engineering Programme, you'll gain a BEng (Hons) in Engineering. The course will develop multi-disciplinary engineers, giving you a wider scope of a career path to follow.
A Degree Apprenticeship with Porterbrook will mean that you won't just be working towards your qualifications but building opportunities for your future career. Whilst learning the background and fundamentals of how the company operates, you will start to build on your previous experiences.
The apprentice scheme will run for a 4-year cycle of placements followed by a transition into a permanent role upon successful completion of objectives.
As part of your role, you will complete a Professional Engineering Degree Apprenticeship.
This course will develop multi-disciplinary engineers, giving a wider scope of career paths to follow. You will learn the theory and practices of engineering and digital technologies including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials and design as well as computational skills.
The applied nature of this course means you will complete work-based assignments and projects throughout, meaning you will gain a real understanding of the principles taught and benefits to businesses directly in the workplace.
The course also allows you in the final two years to choose from four pathways with a range of modules to suit the direction of your career and your employer's needs.
Your pathway choices will be:
- Control Systems Engineer
- Electrical / Electronic Technical Support
- Manufacturing Engineer
- Product Design and Development Engineer
The course has been designed to meet the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) accreditations requirements, therefore in the future, students will be able to attain IEng (Incorporated Engineer) professional registration status.
Responsibilities
- Working across many business functions including Engineering, Standards, Project Management, Operations and Commercial
- Deliver agreed objectives with placement line manager
- Assist in any reporting requirements as agreed with your line manager
- Review National Incident Reports and assist the implementation of remedial actions as necessary
- Assist in the creation or amendment of Vehicle Overhaul / Maintenance Instructions (VOI / VMI)
- Support planning processes for contracted heavy maintenance events
- Support the delivery of unit modifications and enhancement projects
- Travel to customer and supplier sites as directed by your line manager and adhere to the safety conditions in place
- Support and the fleet team with monitoring and condition of Porterbrook rolling stock assets, support the team with any issues identified
- Assist in the engineering change process between Porterbrook, customers and suppliers
- Deliver staged period and yearly reports as required in line with HR requirements
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
General Requirements
- Maths (GCSE Grade C or above)
- English (GCSE Grade C or above)
- Science (GCSE Grade C or above
- At least two GCE A Level C Grade or above in a relevant Maths/Scientific/Technology subjects.
or
- An Advanced VCE award in an appropriate Engineering/Manufacturing/Technology topic
or
- An EdExcel/BTEC/SCOTVEC National Certificate or Diploma in a Science/Engineering/ Technology based subject
Essential Skills
- Effectively communicate via verbal and written formats to deliver a result
- Computer literate, with experience in the use of Microsoft Office software
- Ability to plan workloads and understand prioritising
- Passionate to drive for results and achieve a consistent high level
- Report writing and presentation skills
Desirable Skills
- Design or/and maintenance background
- An interest in rail or the rail sector
Entry to the programme of study is normally through demonstration of a minimum of 112 tariff points.
Applicants must also hold GCSE grades in Maths, English and additional STEM subject at grades C, 4, or above. Disciplines studied post-GCSE must include any Engineering or relevant STEM subjects (Physics recommended). In addition to the required entry tariff applicants must have also achieved an A level in Maths at grade B.
Where required subjects are not held, applicants might be required to complete a Mathematics bridge course (Mobius). Apprenticeship applicants must hold an offer of employment before enrolling on the course.
