Apprenticeship Standard: Associate Project Manager
TfL has some of the most exciting Projects in the world; 4LM – the most complicated signalling upgrade in history, Silvertown Tunnel, Barking Riverside Extension, Bank Capacity Upgrade, DLR Replacement Rolling Stock, to name a few of the high-profile projects. - Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4 week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements

Entry Requirements
You should already hold, or be working towards, a minimum of 2 GCSE’s Grade 4 (C) and above, including Maths and English Language, plus 2 A-Levels in any subject at grade A* - D or equivalent.
You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.
You must be 18 years of age by 8 September 2025 to be eligible for this scheme.
Please be advised that should you be successful in getting an offer for this scheme, your offer will be subject to a satisfactory medical which may include but is not limited to: drugs and alcohol screening, eye test and hearing test.

Job Overview
The Mayor of London has a high-reaching programme to deliver an affordable, accessible, safe and modern transport network to our city and its visitors. Our Project Management team is responsible for delivery of the hundreds of projects and new initiatives that impact Londoners every day; from new cycle lanes, upgrading train tracks and signalling systems, designing safer road layouts to providing world-leading information and ticketing systems. Our business plans will make this programme a reality by increasing the capacity and stability of our network to cope with growing passenger numbers. It is an ongoing balance between running the network and investing in it for the future. You will be a part of the team that delivers this investment programme to improve the network which is vital in ensuring we manage modern demands effectively on an ageing transport network, in order to keep London moving.
What will I be doing?
As an apprentice you will be supporting your project team in their day-to-day tasks and no two days will be the same. Depending on your project you could be supporting the identification and management of risks to your project, working with a planner ensuring the schedule is accurate, drafting a report to senior management on progress as well as working with contractors and the delivery team to ensure that work is delivered on time. The teams you work in will be various sizes and multidisciplinary and everyone, including you, will have a key role to play.
Skills
Your two-year development programme will be made up of up of four six-month placement rotations in different areas of TfL. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:
Placement 1 – Surface Transport – 6 months
Understanding the operational business and the fundamentals of Project Management in a large organisation with many different stakeholders.
Placement 2 – Major Projects – 6 months
You’ll gain stakeholder management experience with some of the biggest transport contractors in the UK. You’ll support the Project Manager in contract management, package handovers, assessing risks and managing the budget.
Placement 3 – London Underground – 6 months
You’ll gain a holistic understanding of the station, from power and signalling, to engineering and staffing, you’ll support the teams in seeking continuous improvements to upgrade the networks.
Placement 4 – Technology and Data – 6 months
You’ll learn to consolidate and manage planning schedules, support the development of business cases for new projects so that the team can ensure they reach financial targets whilst gaining exposure to different type of engineering and technology projects.
Where can this career take me?
Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off intoan Assistant Project Manager or Project Coordinator position, which could lead to further career progression opportunities such as Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager and Senior Project Manager.
You can become a registered member of the Association of Project Management once you have completed the scheme
What training and support will you get?
You will be working towards aLevel 4 apprenticeship qualification by completing a portfolio of work and a professional discussion.
Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements.
Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements. We'll support your professional development through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking.
You'll also receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from your:
- Placement manager: Responsible for your day-to-day management and support with your development
- Scheme sponsor: A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line manager responsibility
- Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who gives support to you and ensure that you feel welcomed in the organisation
- Development adviser: Supports your professional development through providing career coaching and career progression at TfL

Assessment Process
You will receive support and information around each assessment stage as you progress through your application.

Please pay close attention to emails and deadlines provided noting you have 1 week to complete assessments and we cannot re-issue these tests.
Assessment centres for apprenticeship roles will take place from February-April, please note that many roles only have 1 assessment day and we are unable to guarantee additional dates. We are conducting assessment centres in person and virtually (role dependent).
