Job Purpose You will make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the CVR, through leading and contributing to world-changing and internationally competitive research, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the CVR. You will publish in high quality research journals, present at international meetings/symposia and participate in review and advisory groups and panels. You will engage with external stakeholders to further the potential impact of the research. You will supervise postgraduate students and train postdoctoral researchers and contribute to the School’s teaching curriculum. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. To take the lead in planning, developing and sustaining an internationally leading research programme, making a significant contribution to knowledge in the field of pathogenic tick-borne viruses which aligns with the strategic mission of the CVR. 2. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard and engage in shaping CVR/School/College research strategy and enhancing the quality of the CVR/School/College’s research profile. 3. Act as principal investigator on externally funded research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact. Take a lead in engaging with key external parties which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the CVR. 4. Enhance your research profile, reputation and esteem through: sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high quality refereed journals, generating research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit; presentation at international and national conferences and at internal/external seminars, colloquia and workshops; internal/external bodies to support future research; developing and maintaining collaborations across the CVR/School/College and University and external Academic and Industrial Partners; contribution to team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the CVR/School/College. 5. Provide academic leadership to the CVR’s Containment Level 3 laboratories including chairing the CL3 management group. 6. Participate in attracting high calibre research students to undertake doctoral research and provide leadership to early career staff and students through research collaboration, supervision and mentorship, assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems as necessary. 7. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research teams (beyond subject/School level). 8. Create and develop effective networks with staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities. 9. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. 10. Disseminate research findings nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the CVR externally. 11. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/CVR and MRC. 12. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate. 13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the CVR Director. 14. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in molecular virology with an extensive and established reputation in research, and/or teaching experience within the subject area, along with membership of a professional body, where appropriate. A2. Recognised expertise in tick-borne viruses to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field. A3. A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level. A4. Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge. A5. Demonstrable knowledge of operating CL3 suites including knowledge of relevant legislation and HSE requirements. SkillsEssential: C1. Engagement with the current and future priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims and ambitions. C2. Membership of a relevant professional body, if applicable. C3. Understanding of equality and diversity issues and a commitment to the promotion of these within a university environment. C4. Ability to demonstrate independent thought in order to generate original research and secure research income. ExperienceEssential: E1. Substantial track record of published research in the broad area of virology/viral diseases with a focus on arboviruses and tick-borne viruses of international standard compatible with enhancing the University’s submission to the UK Research Excellence Framework. E2. Established track record of successfully securing funding for research projects, as appropriate for the subject specialism. E3. Internationally recognised excellence and reputation in the subject area. E4. Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues in subject area/team. E5. Substantial track record in a research area complementing the research programmes currently conducted at the CVR. E6. Principal Investigator or key contributor on current UKRI/EU and/or other externally peer-reviewed grants. E7. Sustained experience of teaching, supervision and examination of PhD students and researchers at postgraduate and doctoral level. E8. Evidence of agenda setting in research through e.g. participation/advisory role in professional, government or industrial bodies, or through effective links with the user community (e.g. through advisory bodies). Desirable: F1. Sustained collaboration with external partners, evidenced by contract licence, consultancy, income or other formal collaborative agreement, including protecting the IP of research activities, spinout formation, or involvement in social enterprise or NGO. Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 9, £58,596 - £65,814 per annum. This post is full time and has funding for up to 13 months from the start date in post.
