About
Following the completion of my BA (Hons) in Education (with a Specialism in Early Years) in June 2019, from the University of Stirling, I was left with the desire to use this degree and the experiences that I accumulated over the degree course to work for an employer who could make best use of these skills and qualities which I have been taught and then developed over the intervening years.
I have various former work experiences such as Police Constable, for Strathclyde Police/Police Scotland, living and working overseas as a primary school teacher, and several years’ experience in management within the building industry, and a short period of self-employment.
I can have a wealth of experience and transferable skills in communication, management and leadership, and working with a wide variety of people.
My degree included modules in teaching education and practice.
I am knowledgeable in the many theories of teaching and education and have developed and understanding of those theories. Alongside my early year’s specialism I also undertook a self-organised placement in a local nursery. My knowledge and understanding of literacy and numeracy was developed, along with a wide range of teaching skills. I engaged in on-campus microteaching that was closely related to my education modules.
I had the opportunity to teach small groups of children and receive constructive feedback before undertaking 3 school placements and continued to develop my understanding of teaching literacy and numeracy.
I undertook an advanced Education module which focused on differences, identities and inclusion.
My module also focused on Pedagogy, policy and practice related to my subject specialism.
Alongside the education component of my degree course, I also completed modules in both Psychology and Sociology, giving me a wide-ranging knowledge of complementary subject matter.
As part of my degree, I worked with several groups of people to complete team tasks. As a mature student, I was viewed as the natural group leader and helped to manage the team to achieve high scores in assessed group tasks.
In my earlier role as a police constable, I worked with different people from many differing areas of society, and learned to assess situations quickly maintaining my own safety and the safety of others.
My experience of working as a primary school teacher in Sri-Lanka in an international school enabled me to engage with and understand people from a variety of different cultures and religious beliefs, as well as being the football and rugby coach for the senior school.
As a Plant Supervisor with Marshalls PLC, I was responsible for the care and wellbeing of up to 15 members of staff. I planned shift patterns, managed wage structures, conducted appraisals, and contributed to management meetings to assist planning, oversee production, quality and efficiency. My early years in the army provided me with discipline, time management skills and enabled me to be highly organised, all of which are important transferable skills when working in teams. During my degree programme I enhanced my oral and written communication skills, honing my written presentation skills by writing academic assignments, presenting numerous power point presentations, engaging with educators and fellow students regarding current debates in educational policies.
My role as a police constable often consisted of presenting evidence in court, writing formal crime reports, which were required to be factual and accurate, and speak with vulnerable people in an empathetic manner.
In my previous school teaching role, I learned valuable presentation skills, the ability to think on my feet, and the need to engage students who have different ways of learning.
I feel that my prior knowledge and qualifications as well as my desire to learn new skills, would make me a positive addition to the team.
