GBS is seeking a Study Skills Lecturer to cover a 12 month maternity post to support our students in developing effective learning strategies by delivering workshops and one-on-one sessions focusing on academic skills, including writing, research, time management, and exam preparation.
Please note this 12 month position is to work on an academic project, called Project 100 (P100) within our Provost office.
P100 is a project that specifically targets students at GBS during their first 100 days on their course. The aim is to provide varying types of support to help the students adjust to university and the requirements needed to succeed. One element of support is the P100 Study Support Team whose role is to work with those students who have demonstrated (via a Learning Needs Assessment) that they need additional support, outside of the classroom. Study Support Tutors are assigned a caseload of students between 250 -350 students with each intake, and their main responsibility is to reach out to those students and engage them in 1:1 tutorials throughout the first year of their studies.
As a Study Skills Lecturer you will work in close collaboration with subject lecturers to develop and teach study skills within the curriculum across a range of HE programmes at Foundation Level. This includes for example, improving English language and numeracy, organisational and presentation skills, digital literacy and basic IT skills, reading, writing and higher order research skills.
Main Responsibilities
- Working collaboratively to teach academic literacies and digital skills and providing assignment support
- Designing/documenting bespoke courses, digital resources, workshop plans and individual schemes of work as required to develop study skills in the curricula, ensuring current, relevant and effective skills are consistently delivered across GBS
- Delivering/evaluating teaching and identifying areas for potential improvement, recommending these to the Dean and Associate Dean to enhance the quality of teaching, learning and overall student experience in accordance with the GBS’s Learning and Teaching strategy
- Maintaining accurate records ensuring compliance and maintenance of relevant systems, including monitoring student attendance
- Providing tutorial consultations with students, constructive comments that are reactive to the individual student need, explaining where work fails to meet assessment criteria and suggesting ways to improve their work / working practices.
- Recording details from these appointments for statistical, evaluation and quality purposes, and to refer students to other services as appropriate.
- Effectively engaging with VLE and research resources and facilitate students’ learning by means of engagement with online resources and activities.
- Contributing to GBS quality assurance systems and processes.
Requirements
Essential
- Master's degree and/or a PhD in the relevant area
- Successful track record of teaching adult learners from diverse backgrounds on HE programmes
- Proven experience of providing individual and group study skills support in response to identified learning needs
- Willingness to lead a specific area of literacy development, such as reading, writing, critical thinking, numeracy, digital skills, research skills (quantitative or qualitative), project and dissertation support, peer-assisted learning;
- High level of digital literacy and advanced communication skills

- Expertise in digital educational resources development
- Course design and curriculum development experience
- DELTA qualification or Advance HE Fellowship
