Lecturer / Senior Lecturer at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences
Cardiff University, School of Optometry and Vision Sciences is seeking a motivated and forward-thinking optometrist to provide high quality clinical practice and teaching in the teach and treat glaucoma clinic.
We’d like to hear from you if you are an optometrist who is GOC registered with a Higher Certificate or Diploma in Glaucoma as well as a passion for education with an ability to develop, deliver and evaluate a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught modules and programmes.

The post is offered at Grade 7 Lecturer or Grade 8 Senior Lecturer on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum 40% time/2 days per week). Part-time roles are offered with the primary aim of offering the appointee the opportunity to continue to undertake clinical practice outside the University.
The post is offered on the Teaching and Scholarship career pathway and is open-ended.

£50,694 - £55,295 per annum, pro rata (Grade 7)

Job Description
Main function
To deliver high-quality teaching, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties, as required. To pursue excellence in clinical practice, teaching and pedagogy and to inspire others to do the same.
Senior Lecturer In Addition:
- To lead on and develop the clinical teaching and clinical provision for glaucoma within the School.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
- To contribute to the design and delivery of teaching programmes/courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to contribute to module development as part of a module team.
- To independently contribute to module and course development and lead modules.
- To contribute to programme evaluation and research to assess the quality and impact of teaching and learning, with priority on delivering through the student voice an excellent student experience.
- To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations, setting and marking assessments and providing constructive feedback to students in a timely manner, administration, and participation in committee work.
- To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students in their learning experience under the guidance of a mentor/module leader; and to develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students.
- To supervise and help co-ordinate the work of undergraduate and postgraduate students including supervision of WGOS4 glaucoma clinics and placements.
- To act as a personal tutor, providing support and guidance to students, and building and establishing trust.
Senior Lecturer In Addition:
- To supervise optometrists on Placements for Higher Certificates in Glaucoma in the glaucoma clinics.
- To co-ordinate a programme of evaluation, and research to assess the quality and impact of teaching and learning, and, to make a significant contribution to the international development of such teaching.
Scholarship
- To contribute to scholarship through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums and to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
- To engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work.
- To contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community.
Senior Lecturer In Addition:
- To undertake and lead educational research, pedagogical evaluation and scholarly activity, leading to publications in high quality professional and scholarly journals.
- To participate in national and international conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of one’s own scholarship.

Essential Criteria
Qualifications And Education
- GOC registration. You will be expected to maintain CPD to ensure continued GOC registration, and to uphold membership of an NHS Health Board to practice as an Optometrist in the Cardiff University, and/or any associated, patient-facing clinics.
- A Higher Certificate in Glaucoma or a Diploma in Glaucoma or a comparable qualification.
- Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning and/or equivalent qualification or willingness to work towards one.
- Grade 7: Substantial experience at advanced practice in Glaucoma Grade 8: Substantial experience at advanced practice in glaucoma with national leadership in glaucoma clinical practice
Knowledge, Skills And Experience
- Grade 7: Substantial clinical supervision or teaching experience at undergraduate/postgraduate level. Grade 8: experience teaching at advanced clinical practice.
- Grade 7: growing national reputation within academic and/or clinical domain. Grade 8: established national and growing international reputation
- Grade 7: experience of delivering and developing high quality advanced glaucoma care Grade 8: substantial experience of delivering and developing high quality advanced glaucoma care
Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
- A dependable individual, who is pro-active, adaptable, with excellent teamworking and communication skills, along with a willingness to contribute positively to the management of the School. The ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media.
- The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances.
- Ability to act as module leader and co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
Desirable Criteria
- A Diploma in Therapeutic Prescribing (Independent Prescribing).
- Evidence of collaborations with the optometry sector.
- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking.
- Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the school.
- Welsh Language skills.

- To be involved in School level strategic planning of teaching and clinics and contribute to wider strategic planning processes of the School and the University.
- To lead on and undertake administrative duties associated with the school’s education provision.
- To engage effectively with industrial, commercial, and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the school’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.
