What You’ll Be Doing
A degree apprenticeship is a brilliant option if you’re looking to gain a degree whilst hitting the ground running in the world of work. You’ll kick-start your career blending academic study with work-based learning. As a Control & Instrumentation Degree Apprentice, you'll split your time between learning out on site, working alongside experts solving real-world problems, and attending dedicated training and university days.
You’ll join the National Gas Transmission Ops team at one of our operational sites in the North West or the midlands. Working with a larger team, you’ll maintain pipelines, terminals and compressors to ensure the safe, secure and reliable operation of the gas network. The gas network that keeps our homes warm and our lights on. Travel will become an exciting part of your day-to-day life on the job, so being able to drive is essential.
You’ll develop a diverse range of skills including risk management, safety management and project management. It also fosters planning, prioritisation of work, creative thinking, problem-solving, written, and oral communication.
You’ll cover:
- Professional engineering practice and engineering management
- Digital engineering
- Engineering mathematics and mathematical methods in engineering
- Industrial plant engineering
- Computer Aided Design
- Thermo-fluid sciences
- Sustainable Engineering
- Control systems and instrumentation
- Elective modules specific to Control & Instrumentation
We’ll work closely with your university to review your progress at regular intervals, providing feedback and guiding your development. You’ll have a tailored personalised plan that ensures you have appropriate support and training. Most of your learning will be on the job, with off-the-job training and one-to-one tutoring. Your apprenticeship will end with the completion of a dissertation and an End Point Assessment.
About You
This apprenticeship is perfect for someone who is self-motivated, pro-active and thrives on ‘getting stuck in’. You’ll need to be a clear communicator, as this role will require to deal with a range of stakeholders at all levels across the business. Control & Instrumentation Degree Apprentices who are inquisitive, curious and take a genuine interested in the business will thrive here. If you’re someone that’s excited by the opportunity to learn, and will take ownership for your own development, then this could be a brilliant opportunity for you.
You’ll need:
- Three A Levels at CCC or above including a Mathematics based subject and a STEM subject, or equivalent BTECs.
- Have a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above including Mathematics, English and a science, technology or engineering related subject.

- Our sites are located across the UK, so you’ll need to be comfortable with travel, so being able to drive is essential. This means you’ll have a licence before joining us on September 1st 2025.
- You'll need to have permanent right to work in the UK for the entirety of this programme, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. You’ll also need to have been a UK/EU/EAA resident for the past three years or more prior to starting the course.

What should you include in your cover letter?

You’ll receive a range of benefits that reward your great work. Your starting annual salary will be
£29,607. You'll receive a generous holiday allowance with the option to buy and sell additional days, as well as a generous pension scheme. For every £1 you pay in, National Gas will contribute £2.
The 'nice to knows'
You'll start in a large cohort of other apprentices, where you'll attend an in-person induction in September 2025, fostering strong workplace relationships that will build the foundation of your future networks.
This role can be based at either or Churchover, Warrington or Wormington site. If you have a preference, please indicate this on your application.
