Brief Description
Route Services is a division of Network Rail that provides the Routes with services so they can help Network Rail deliver a better railway for a better Britain. We support the Routes with a myriad of services and supplies they need to maintain and operate the railway. See the diagram for a breakdown of our services. This role sits within
Supply Chain Operations (SCO), an area of the business which supplies and delivers the logistics, materials, components, rail and road fleet that enable the maintenance and renewal of the railway.
SCO keeps the materials, machinery and components required by its customers moving – making sure they are on-site when needed so work can go ahead as planned and on schedule.
About The Role (External)
In this dynamic role, you'll be a driving force behind fostering a culture of excellence in Health, Safety, and Environmental management. By offering expert advice and hands-on support, you'll empower our team to embrace best practices, champion innovative solutions, and inspire transformative change in safety and environmental behaviours across every aspect of our work.
Key accountabilities include:
- Support the briefing and implementation of national and area safety campaigns.
- Coach and guide the team on workforce safety and environmental Standard Procedures.
- Assist in the upskilling in health, safety and environmental issues.
- Provide support in the delivery of workforce accident and incident investigations.
- Provide support to the Workforce Health Safety & Environment Advisors in the collation of workforce health, safety and environment data.
- Provide support in safety and environmental meetings.
- Where appropriate provide assistance in the review and acceptance of method statements and risk assessments.
- Where appropriate provide advice in the delivery of the accident reduction strategy.
- Monitor workforce safety behaviours in the workplace.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following criteria:
Essential
- Experience of working in an operational environment.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills.
- Able to understand and articulate / explain written procedures.
- Knowledge and experience of accident and incident investigation processes.
- Knowledge of risk assessment processes.
- Good working knowledge of problem-solving skills.
- Able to understand simple data and numerical trends.
- Basic IT skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Desirable
- Professional safety or environment related qualification.
- A basic understanding of safety procedures and legislation applicable to railway maintenance.
- Full driving licence plus C1.

Vacancy type: This role is permanent.
Location: Milton Keynes. This role will be supporting a national function and will involve travelling and overnight stays.
Hours: 3 5 hours per week with hybrid working and travel as required.
Salary range: £33,500 - £38,500 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

This role is safety critical and will require a medical and/or
Personal Track Safety Competence.
Personal Track Safety (PTS) is a set of safety regulations and procedures that individuals must adhere to when working on or near the tracks of the UK rail network.
Drugs and Alcohol Standard:
All prospective external candidates offered a conditional role will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
