The role
Reporting to the Apprentice Quality Manager, the National Functional Skills Specialist is responsible for facilitating the development of essential functional skills among apprentices in the automotive maintenance and repair industry. The National Functional Skills Specialist will focus on preparing apprentices with the foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and communication, which are fundamental for navigating the demands and requirements of their apprenticeship and future careers.
Offering targeted guidance, teaching materials, and assessments, the National Functional Skills Specialist will ensure that apprentices not only excel in their technical training but also acquire the necessary skills to communicate effectively, solve problems efficiently, and work collaboratively in a professional automotive setting.
The role requires frequent quality reviews of the FS Curriculum, teaching, and resources to ensure the evolving needs of the learners are met.
This permanent role is based upon 40hrs/week between Monday and Friday and will operate on a hybrid/remote basis to include time spent onsite at our ETEL Training Academy in Derby, as well as other UK ETEL locations as required by the business. Flexibility therefore regarding travel plus a full UK Cat B drivers licence is essential to your application.
Key accountabilities- Support English Apprentices to achieve Functional Skills L1 English & Maths qualifications.
- Support English Apprentices to progress to Functional Skills L2 English & Maths.
- Support Welsh Apprentices to achieve ESW Communication and Application of Number L1 qualifications.
- Support Scottish Apprentices to achieve Core Skills in Communication, Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology, Problem Solving and Working with others.
- Take full ownership of designing and implementing FS English & Maths L1 and L2 curriculum within Apprentice Standards.
- Design and develop high quality learning materials and eLearning content to support the effective delivery of FS English & Maths L1 and L2 qualifications.
- Deliver exceptional standard of teaching and blended learning of FS English & Maths L1 and L2.
- Effective schedule management for the Cohorts; virtual and classroom-based sessions at all training academies, plus centre visits when required for 1:1 support.
- Booking Functional Skills exams via Skills First, ensuring timely exam completions pre-EPA.
- Maintain accurate records of Apprentice English & Maths exam requirements.
- Maintain QIP for Functional Skills within the organisation.
- Ensure SEN requirements have been identified, learning support plans are in place, and support records are maintained.
- Update appropriate systems with Apprentice English & Maths diagnostic results.
- Maintain accurate records of Apprentice prior achievements of English & Maths.
- Utilise LMS system to allocate Apprentices into ability groups according to academic grades.
- Play a pivotal role in reviewing existing FS resources and improving/diversifying to meet the needs of individual learners.
- Ensure resources are centralised and filed appropriately for access.
- Support the implementation of any new systems relating to FS.
- Support the Apprentice surveys, using learner voice satisfaction feedback to proactively meet learner needs.
- Maintain a solid understanding of Ofsted, ESFA, DfE, and Accountability Framework.
- Act as an ambassador for the Apprenticeship Programme, increasing stakeholder understanding of Apprenticeship frameworks and standards.
- Support Apprentice Coach Team and wider teams with their English & Maths skills for their professional development.
- Collaborate with the wider People Team where required.
- When required, support the Apprentice Quality Manager with Quality related tasks and activities.
Skills & experience- Previous experience in a same/similar role.
- Solid working knowledge of Apprentice Standards and OFSTED Requirements.
- Passionate about Early Careers and driven to effectively motivate, inspire, support, and teach 16 – 19-year-olds.
- Confident and influential communicator, with the ability to take sometimes complex or unfamiliar subjects and deliver them in an understandable way.
- Good overall level of IT skills (MS Suite, LMS, SharePoint)
- Proven time management skills, effectively managing own calendar to meet the needs of the Apprenticeship Programme.
- Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to work calmly whilst meeting competing deadlines.
- Capacity to alternate between working autonomously and supporting/collaborating with colleagues across the wider People Team.
- Demonstrably keen on professional self-development and keeping up to date with all new developments within the sector.

- Level 5 Subject Specialism – Mathematics
- Level 5 Subject Specialism – English
- GCSE Grade 4 minimum in English and Maths.
- Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths.
- Degree in Adult Education (Desirable)
- Member of the Society of Education & Training
- Full UK Cat B drivers licence
