Your role and responsibilities
This is a very rewarding role with our instructors having the opportunity to encourage learners to be fit, healthy, and environmentally friendly whilst carrying out an enjoyable activity. You will be delivering positive skills that will equip our learners for the rest of their lives.
In this role, you will be required to adhere to road safety laws as you do in your daily life. You should be able to plan and organise courses and be able to demonstrate reliability and efficient time-keeping. Experience in cycling and awareness of potential road safety hazards are also required. You must be willing to travel throughout Suffolk (for which mileage expenses may be claimed in line with Suffolk County Council’s policy) and be prepared to work in all weather conditions.
You will be trained to national standards, on a four-day course provided by Suffolk County Council. You will then be required to complete ongoing web-based training, with 1st4Sport to achieve your accreditation as a qualified Bikeability instructor, within 6 months of the course. There will be ongoing professional development to maintain the qualification.
- If you are already a qualified Bikeability Instructor there is no requirement to retake the course.
You will be working as a professional cycling instructor, delivering Bikeability (“Cycling Proficiency for the 21st century”) with colleagues from the Road Safety Team. You will be travelling to a variety of locations across Suffolk.
- working with adults and children in a formal setting
- liaising with managers and fellow instructors, ensuring you keep to dates and times booked with schools and other trainees
- maintaining accurate records such as risk assessments and registers
- ensuring you are proactive and demonstrate reliability and professionalism at all times.
Your role will support riders as they travel in an active and sustainable way. It supports Suffolk County Council’s casualty reduction activities, as well as supporting healthier lifestyles, reducing the environmental impact of traffic, and developing skills for life.
You will need
- to be a regular, competent cyclist
- good communication skills
- experience of working with people in a range of settings
- to be available to attend a 4 day Instructor’s course, dates to be arranged.
