About The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our award-winning Travel Training Service, part of the Community Provisions service within Children and Adults directorate which provides independent travel training to adults with disabilities using all modes of public transport.
This support is provided by adults with lived experience who are employed as Travel Trainers. The service has been recognized as both unique and innovative and forms an essential part of Hounslow’s personalisation agenda.
We are looking for a dynamic and innovative individual who has good communication skills as well as a passion for making a difference! Taking a genuine interest in our Residents you will be responsible for protecting their welfare and ensuring they are safeguarded from harm at all times.
About The Team You’ll Be Working In

Key Responsibilities:
- To work with their line manager to develop and implement travel training plans to support residents to become independent travellers, whilst undertaking necessary training relevant to the post.
- To offer physical and emotional assistance to residents who may require it and taking extra care when assisting residents on or off public transport. Travel Trainers must not move or handle residents beyond their capabilities. Appropriate methods of assistance must be used at all times.
- To be responsible for reporting any incidences, issues and concerns regarding their residents to their line manager as soon as possible.
This Includes:
- Reporting any challenging needs displayed by residents.
- Promptly communicating any concerns regarding travel for example, lateness, bus diversions, accidents, all changes to the original travel plan.
- Travel Trainers are also responsible for communicating their own lateness and sickness.
- In the event of an emergency, Travel Trainers should contact their manager immediately and give detailed description of what happened.
- To ensure that there is a travel plan for each journey by working with the line manager and sometimes with other Travel Trainers/ team members to complete route plans and risk assessments, whilst working split shifts, Mon-Sun, in line with service provision.
About You
What is expected from the successful candidate:
- To have good knowledge of local transport networks and bus routes within the London Borough of Hounslow and within West London.
- To take an active role in independently travel training residents using a range of training techniques including Training in Systematic Instruction.
- To develop and maintain effective working relationships with residents and other stakeholders and to actively participate in the training of future Travel Training colleagues.
- To deliver a range of training to stakeholders promoting keeping safe in the community, safe travel and independent travelling skills and to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade and scope of the post.
- Must be willing to study towards and achieve accredited training required to be a Travel Trainer. Previous experience of working with people with disabilities is desirable.
- Must be able to demonstrate use of basic IT systems and software with an appetite to learn new systems.
This post is considered by the authority to be a customer-facing position; as such it falls within scope of the Code of Practice on English language requirement for public sector workers. The council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements.
