Job Purpose
To make a substantial and positive contribution towards the strategic direction of the School and provide academic leadership and support in Paediatric Dentistry. You will play a significant role in the delivery of undergraduate teaching in Paediatric Dentistry. You will be expected to actively participate in supporting the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry, and take leadership roles as required. Applicants will be expected to perform the duties of an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To lead the design and delivery of a range of teaching, assessment and feedback activities in Paediatric Dentistry, in an environment that promotes scholarly learning for both undergraduate and taught postgraduate students, in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This may include delivery of seminars, lectures, clinical and pre-clinical teaching. On average, there are 90 undergraduate students per year.
2. To be responsible for developing creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the quality of educational opportunities available to undergraduate students is continually enhanced.
3. To participate in the ongoing development and review of undergraduate curricula.
4. To take the lead and supervise undergraduate student research and elective projects.
5. To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
6. To engage in scholarship relevant to delivery of dental education and to disseminate outcomes appropriately.
7. To contribute actively to the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry.
8. To undertake senior administrative duties associated with the delivery of teaching and the academic management of the Dental School and wider School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing as determined by the Head of Section, Director of Dental Education and Head of the Dental School
9. To undertake the clinical duties as an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, as agreed in annual joint University/ NHS job planning. These are outlined below.
10. To undertake undergraduate teaching activity at Outreach Centres and hospitals located outwith the Dental School & Hospital if required.
The job description will be subject to review on an annual basis as a result of joint annual appraisal. It is envisaged that commitments will be annualised throughout the year to reflect academic and clinical commitments. Joint appraisal is a condition of employment for all medical academic staff. In accordance with the Follett Report, participation in a joint appraisal arrangement will be agreed locally.
Main NHS Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To contribute to all aspects of the clinical activity of the Department of Paediatric Dentistry.
2. Perform duties at the Royal Hospital for Children including General anaesthetic lists.
3. To contribute to the patient referral vetting process.
4. Whilst there is no out-of-hours on call commitment, there is a duty to undertake consultant service during working hours and will contribute to this rota.
5. As part of the on-call rota, you may be asked to provide an opinion on the management of inpatients at the Children’s hospital. While much of this can be managed remotely and with the assistance of staff in training, a consultant may be required to review inpatients in person.
6. To contribute to and support the active clinical governance programme of quality improvement projects, clinical audit, protocol development and supervision of staff in training and specialty dentists undertaking such projects. This also includes working within the clinical policy framework of NHS GGC.
7. Manage the clinical administration related to service delivery utilising existing administrative support and systems and engaging with the active development of modern processes for the service under the NHS GGC Digital Strategy.
8. Co-operate with the existing consultant team with regards to planned leave in order to ensure continuity and delivery of the expected clinical service and teaching level across the year, annualised where necessary.
9. Actively integrate with colleagues as a team to deliver the clinical service and reporting to the Paediatric Dentistry Clinical Lead on clinical matters.
10. Be involved in training junior staff including foundation trainees and specialist trainees (both NHS and academic) mainly in Paediatric Dentistry but may include specialties with whom we have a working relationship for patient management e.g. Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and medical specialities in the Children’s Hospital.
11. There is an expectation that the individual will work together with NHS and University staff to facilitate and take part in clinical trials as opportunities arise.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Registrable qualification with the General Dental Council and must be fully registered at the time of post commencement.
A2. Eligible for inclusion on the GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry and must be included on the specialist list by the time of post commencement.
A3. Successful completion of an SAC approved 3-year pre CCST training programme in Paediatric Dentistry, or equivalent.
A4. Successful completion of an SAC approved, 2 year minimum, training programme in a Fixed Term training appointment (FTTA) in Paediatric Dentistry (post CCST training), or within 6 months of completion of such training, or equivalent.
A5. Hold, working towards, or be willing to work towards a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.
A6. Masters degree/higher research degree or equivalent.
Desirable:
B1. Fellowship in Dental Surgery or MFDS from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges, or equivalent.

E1. Experience of delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Paediatric Dentistry.
E2. Established track-record of quality research or learning, teaching & scholarship.
E3. Experience in administration of dental teaching programmes.
E4. Experience of management processes in an academic environment.
E5. Experience in academic assessment of dental students.
E6. Experience of mentoring students and/or staff.
Desirable:
F1. Evidence of establishing collaborative working arrangements.
F2. Experience of supervising postgraduate taught/research students.
Terms and Conditions
An honorary consultant contract will be applied for from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with an associated salary from £107,144 – £142,369 per annum on the New Consultant Contract (NCC) Scotland. Further payments may be made by the NHS for clinical activity e.g. a clinical EPA, Discretionary Points, Merit Award and/or Availability Supplement, if eligible.
This post is full time and open ended.
