De Montfort University (DMU) proudly introduces the Board of Governors’ Governor Apprenticeship Programme, designed to cultivate a diverse pool of future governor candidates. DMU is an institution known for creating opportunities and widening participation. We aim to support individuals who may not have enjoyed traditional educational success but demonstrate great potential. With a vibrant campus in Leicester and international campuses in Dubai, Kazakhstan and Cambodia, DMU serves a global student body while remaining deeply connected to its local community. Our heritage stretches back over 150 years, and we continue to innovate and excel in higher education. Role The Governor Apprenticeship Programme invites exceptional individuals to serve as governor apprentices for two years, providing a unique chance to gain direct experience in higher education governance. As a governor apprentice, you will engage in various university activities, from attending Board of Governors and subcommittee meetings to participating in faculty events and graduations. You will be mentored by current board members, offering you insights into university governance and opportunities to network with senior leaders. This voluntary hands-on experience is invaluable for understanding the intricacies of higher education governance and contributing meaningfully to the university’s strategic direction. Upon successful completion, apprentices may be considered for full independent governor roles or as co-opted members on specific board committees, subject to performance on the programme, and the current vacancies and skills gaps on the board at the time. Ideal Candidate We seek individuals who are passionate about higher education and committed to DMU’s values. Ideal candidates should possess integrity, accountability, and leadership qualities, with a willingness to engage actively in board discussions and contribute to strategic thinking. You do not need prior board or non-executive experience, as the programme aims to develop your skills through comprehensive training and support. We are committed to equality and diversity, and we welcome applications from candidates from underrepresented groups. High levels of integrity, the ability to challenge constructively, and a commitment to the university’s mission are essential. If you are ready to seize this remarkable opportunity to influence the future of higher education at DMU, we encourage you to apply. Please submit the following to the Registrar (Academic) and Secretary to the Board of Governors by email at clerksoffice@dmu.ac.uk A CV detailing your career history, key responsibilities, and achievements.
