The Growth Company’s Education and skills team have an exciting new opportunity for a Learning Mentor who will work with a case load of disadvantaged learners who have barriers to learning, the Learning Mentor will provide tailored support necessary to facilitate learner progression, so they are able to engage in their learning provision. The Learning Mentor will also be able provide additional support in lessons as a Teaching Assistant.
This role will be based at our Wigan and St Helens training centres. This is a fixed term role until July 2025.

Key Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive individual initial diagnostic assessments with learners which will lead to an informed and personalised training and support plan.
- Deliver one to one interventions at the Training Centres and in the Community to support learners to be able to access the curriculum.
- Work as part of a team to co-ordinate and deliver advice, guidance and training interventions that meet the needs of individuals who face barriers in sustaining education.
- Support learners to develop their English and Maths knowledge and IT Skills and to engage in virtual learning.
- Support learners to develop their confident and self-esteem in order to access the rest of the curriculum and access group learning sessions.
- Work with colleagues and key partners to build on rather than duplicate the support that individuals have already received from other programmes and interventions, ensuring the support is effectively sequenced and adds considerable value.
- Work with colleagues to review learners progress and contribute to reviews.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with key partners and agencies in order to generate a flow of eligible and appropriate new learners.
About you
- Good knowledge of education and barriers which learners could face.
- Knowledge of additional learning needs and safe guarding.
- Good knowledge of training, education and employment opportunities.
- A warm, approachable empathetic style and the ability to establish a rapport and build relationships with learners that support them to achieve their qualification and to progress further into education and/or training.
Skills Required
- Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills.
- Ability to identify individuals’ needs including learning needs, being able to provide tailored support.
- Well-developed IT skills, including MI systems, spreadsheets and diary. management, email, data security.
- Ability to work in an outreach capacity, complete visits in the community and lone working if required.
- Flexible approach to work including willingness to travel, with occasional unsociable hours.
- Negotiation skills and the ability to challenge.
- Ability to work to key performance indicators and challenging targets.
- Working with vulnerable young people.
