Join us as an apprentice, and help be the energy behind the change.
Here at National Gas, we are at the forefront of the UK's move towards sustainable energy and achieving our Net Zero goals by 2050. Whilst our teams work behind the scenes to develop the future of our energy systems, you’ll be out with our engineers in the field delivering the natural gas demands of today.
What You’ll Be Doing
A degree apprenticeship is a brilliant option if you’re looking to gain a degree whilst hitting the ground running in the world of work. You’ll kick-start your career blending academic study with work-based learning. As a Project Management Degree Apprentice, you'll split your time between learning out on site, working alongside experts solving real-world problems, and attending dedicated training and university days.
You’ll be joining a team within the IT function, who are tasked with managing projects across our Asset and Operational teams. These teams ensure that our IT systems are robust, fit for purpose, and are able to respond quickly when things don’t go to plan. We utilise AI and various technologies via our extensive group of network partners such as Google, Microsoft and IBM to deliver brilliant solutions to our colleagues. This means that you’ll get the opportunity to travel to India with the team each year.
You’ll develop high-level project management knowledge, capabilities and skills (both human and technical) that will enable you to work within a project team. You’ll be responsible for overseeing projects here at National Gas. We’ll prepare you to strategically, and financially, manage small or large-scale projects and deliver projects that meet their targets. By the end of the degree, you’ll be highly skilled at understanding the needs of your stakeholders and developing relationships whilst demonstrating strong, ethical practice.
You’ll learn:
- Principles of Project Management
- Operations management
- Financial management
- Marketing
- Communication for business leaders
- Leadership and change management
- Business project management & advanced project management
- Governance and quality assurance
- Project proposal
We’ll work closely with your university to review your progress at regular intervals, providing feedback and guiding your development. You’ll have a tailored personalised plan that ensures you have appropriate support and training. Most of your learning will be on the job, with off-the-job training and one-to-one tutoring. Your apprenticeship will end with the completion of a dissertation and an End Point Assessment.
About You
This apprenticeship is perfect if you’ve got an interest in computers and technology – particularly how businesses use it for change and transformation. You’ll be someone able to communicate clearly and concisely, as you’ll be influencing colleagues across the business, bringing them on a journey with you with your projects. Being able to build relationships quickly and having ‘softer skills’, will really help you thrive in this role. You’ll take pride in your work, be proactive and enjoy ‘getting stuck in’.
You’ll need to be comfortable with travel, as you’ll be visiting operations sites with some overnight stays. You’ll typically work from home at least 2 days per week. A driving licence would be desirable but isn’t essential.
You’ll need:
- Three A Levels at CCC or above (or predicted), or equivalent BTECs.
- Have a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above including Mathematics and English.
- A cover letter is essential to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Check out our guidance below!
- Our sites are located across the UK & Ireland, so you’ll need to be comfortable with travel and overnight stays.
- You'll need to have permanent right to work in the UK for the entirety of this programme, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.
What should you include in your cover letter?
A cover letter is a chance for us to get to know you as a person – we understand you may not have workplace experience yet, and that’s absolutely fine! Let us know about your personal qualities and interests. Your cover letter should be no more than one A4 page. Make sure it includes:
- Why you’re interested in working at National Gas
- What personal skills and qualities you have that would make you a great apprentice
- Why you want to become a Project Management Apprentice
