Join us as an apprentice, and help be the energy behind the change.
Here at National Gas, we are at the forefront of the UK's move towards sustainable energy and achieving our Net Zero goals by 2050. Whilst our teams work behind the scenes to develop the future of our energy systems, you’ll be out with our engineers in the field delivering the natural gas demands of today.
What You’ll Be Doing
A degree apprenticeship is a brilliant option if you’re looking to gain a degree whilst hitting the ground running in the world of work. You’ll kick-start your career blending academic study with work-based learning. As a Quantity Surveyor Degree Apprentice, you'll split your time between learning out on site, working alongside experts solving real-world problems, and attending dedicated training and university days.
You’ll be joining a commercially focused team within construction, meaning you’ll develop an awareness and gain experiences giving you a unique broad perspective as a quantity surveyor. It’s an incredibly fluid role where you’ll interact with stakeholders across finance and procurement through to marketing/brand and bid management, giving you a holistic end-to-end view of our process.
You’ll learn how to understand contracts, how they’re managed and the ‘why’ behind our processes. You’ll develop an understanding of negotiations, deal with frameworks and how to deliver work on time and to budget. During this five-year apprenticeship, you’ll develop as a skilled quantity surveyor and work towards your chartership.
You’ll learn:
- Fundamentals of Construction
- Measurement and Cost
- Construction technology, sustainable technology with environmental control
- Law – health, safety, negligence and effective decision-making
- Contract administration – control and finance
- Cost planning and estimating
- Project and financial management
- Practical projects – QS projects, contract practice
We’ll work closely with your university to review your progress at regular intervals, providing feedback and guiding your development. You’ll have a tailored personalised plan that ensures you have appropriate support and training. Most of your learning will be on the job, with off-the-job training and one-to-one tutoring. Your apprenticeship will end with the completion of a dissertation and an End Point Assessment, which will enable you to gain Chartered membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
About You
This apprenticeship is perfect if you’re naturally curious, you’re excited to think of new ideas and challenge existing ones, and able to share your own perspective. We value everyone’s unique contributions, as this is the foundation of a thriving commercial team, able to ‘think outside the box’. You’ll take pride in their work, be proactive and thrive on ‘getting stuck in’.
You’ll need:
- A-levels (BBB) or BTEC Extended Diploma (DDM) or 120 UCAS Tariff points from three A-levels or equivalent qualifications
- GCSEs – English and Maths grade C / 4.
- A cover letter is essential to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Check out our guidance below!
- Our sites are located across the UK, so you’ll need to be comfortable with travel and overnight stays.
- Travel will become an exciting part of your day-to-day life on the job, so being able to drive is essential. This means you’ll have a licence before joining us on September 1st 2025.
You'll need to have permanent right to work in the UK for the entirety of this programme, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
