We are working on innovative automation solutions advancing the state of the art in smart manufacturing, and this role will be critical to that success. The role is to provide technical leadership and strategic direction for the WMG Automation Systems Group (ASG) in its research and applications engineering activities, formulating new partnerships with industry and academia whilst maintaining and growing existing ones. This research includes a broad range of collaborative projects funded through UKRI and the HVM Catapult, as well as Direct Contract Research at WMG. The Chief Engineer will report to the head of ASG and will be responsible for the line management of principal and lead engineers in ASG, ensuring deliverables are met and technical issues resolved rapidly. The role requires outstanding applied technical capability combined with deep strategic awareness. The Chief Engineer will assist the Head of ASG, its other senior academics, and the WMG CTO, also interfacing when required with wider stakeholders, including the Manufacturing Theme Head, the Associate Dean (Research), and other research leaders in the automation and robotics domain, both at WMG and across the HVM Catapult. About You The Chief Engineer will possess outstanding strategic, commercial and technical capabilities, with understanding of the state of the art in manufacturing automation systems, and key application sectors. About The Department ASG is a research group in WMG working on critical collaborative manufacturing automation projects in a wide range of sectors, including automotive, aerospace, electrification, rail, and agri-tech. We work closely with partners across the automation supply chain (end-users, system integrators, and equipment and controls suppliers) to make new approaches to automation possible and commercially successful.
