1. The Appointment
This role will contribute to achieving the College’s mission of, ‘to provide skills to enable all students, employer partners and our community to thrive’.
The purpose of this role is to lead and inspire the Sixth Form curriculum to provide excellent teaching and learning resulting in outstanding results and outcomes for our students.
The post holder will be part of a directorate led by the Assistant Principal -Academic, Creative, Community Digital and Professional Studies. The post holder will be accountable for the success of an agreed cluster of subjects within the Sixth Form curriculum.
Success will be measured through the swift progress that learners make, high value-added scores from learners’ starting points, high grades at examinations, high-quality teaching and learning, student satisfaction surveys and high levels of progression to university, higher apprenticeships or purposeful full-time employment linked to their study.
The role will include line-management responsibilities for the teaching team delivering the subjects for which the CAL is responsible, which will be subject to regular review.
The post holder will teach up to a maximum of 414 hours per year. This will be subject to annual review in the light of changes to Sixth Form provision.
The post holder will work with other department heads and managers, CIAG services and organisations such as DANCOP to deliver continuous improvement, share practice and deliver projects including parental engagement where required.
The successful post holder will be a highly self-motivated, energetic and driven individual, encompassing a strong sense of autonomy. The successful candidate will possess strong presentation and communication skills and be able to clearly demonstrate achievement of demanding targets.

2. The Post
Main Duties and Responsibilities
a) To lead sixth form teaching staff to provide outstanding teaching and learning and secure excellent outcomes for students. To secure high value-added achievement as measured through the ALPS metrics (amongst other systems) for students by ensuring students make swift and sustained good progress from their starting points; by closely monitoring student attendance, punctuality, and performance; and by setting themselves and teachers ambitious targets.
(b) To work with the Head of Sixth Form, other members of the Sixth Form Leadership Team, teachers and coaches to ensure that rapid and appropriate interventions are put in place when students begin to fall behind in their studies. These interventions should be triggered in response to indicators such as attendance, behaviour and academic performance.
c) To work proactively with teachers, students and parents, ensuring effective and timely communication with support and intervention where appropriate.
d) To act as a lead teacher within the Sixth Form team and teach for up to 500 hours per year. To help lead improvements in the teaching practice of teachers. To be a role model across the curriculum area for outstanding teaching and learning.
e) To work with the Head of Sixth Form to ensure the college appropriately responds to national and local priorities. To adapt and develop A-level provision in line with the ASPIRE curriculum, meet the needs and interests of students and potential students and to meet the needs of local communities, employers and D2N2 local enterprise partnership.
f) To support all members of their team to develop and improve their professional practice to deliver inspirational teaching, learning and assessment. This will include formal performance management, if and when this becomes necessary.
g) To work with the Head of Sixth Form to help ensure the Sixth Form curriculum area is efficiently run and delivers its financial contribution targets.
h) To work with the Head of Sixth Form to help ensure that all courses within the department are run effectively and meet awarding body, funding and Ofsted expectations and requirements.
i) To foster and maintain a culture of high expectation and ambition for students to fulfil their potential.
j) To act as a member of the Sixth Form Leadership Team, ensuring robust actions secure sustainable and excellent outcomes for students.
k) To work with the Assistant Principal to plan, action, monitor and evaluate the strategic direction of the department.
l) To work effectively with the Assistant Principal – Academic, Creative, Community Digital and Professional Studies and the Assistant Principal – Quality and Standards and other heads of department with teaching responsibilities to implement quality improvement actions to secure high-quality impact throughout all aspects of Sixth Form provision. Help lead the department in all aspects of quality improvement to ensure SIxth Form staff are fully engaged with college quality improvement processes, challenging targets and key performance indicators are met.
m) To help promote and secure a positive culture of high aspirations, continuous improvement and customer focus amongst the Sixth Form staff team.
n) To be responsible for line managing, development and performance management of some of the Sixth Form staff including appraisals. To inspire and motivate staff, develop and manage team members effectively and challenge and enable them to give their best.
o) To work with the Head of Sixth Form to help produce and own self-assessment position statements and quality improvement plans and continuously review to ensure excellent outcomes for learners.
p) To work with the Assistant Principal - Academic, Creative, Community Digital and Professional Studies and the Assistant Principal – Quality and Standards and other heads of department with teaching responsibilities to help lead and deliver the department’s standardisation, IV, EV and awarding body engagement to ensure high standards are achieved.
q) To nurture and develop collaborative partnerships with relevant external agencies including those providing CIAG and routes to higher education in order to enable students to progress to university, higher apprenticeships and purposeful full-time employment.
r) To promote and raise the positive profile and outstanding reputation of the college’s Sixth Form provision both internally and externally.
s) To deputise for the Head of Sixth Form as and when required in matters relating to education and learners’ outcomes and experiences.
t) To ensure the learning environment is safe, inclusive, meets occupational professional standards and is sustainable.
u) To help resource college Sixth Form open days and students’ recruitment activities.
v) To help ensure departmental team meetings are held regularly to disseminate timely and appropriate information, empower teachers and enable them to contribute effectively to secure high performance.
